What Can I Expect

Join a River Cuckmere kayaking tour for a wonderful, leisurely paddle between Cuckmere Haven and Alfriston in the middle of the East Sussex South Downs!

Suitable for beginners and experienced kayakers alike, this guided trip along the meandering River Cuckmere is filled with wildlife and sights to see, from otters along the river bank, to the White Horse of Litlingen on the hillside above.

Setting off from the mouth of the river at Cuckmere Haven, you will paddle along through meanders at the start, then head upstream along a small tidal river that cuts through one of the most beautiful valleys in the South Downs.

The scenery is simply stunning. Much of the river runs parallel to the South Downs Way, with some parts only accessible by water, meaning you are able see wildlife you may not spot from the usual footpaths.

You’ll pass country pubs, farmland, National Trust-managed countryside and the occasional riverside cottage, before arriving at the delightful village of Alfriston, in the heart of the Cuckmere Valley.

Part of your River Cuckmere kayaking trip includes paddling on a tidal river, so departures do depend on the tides. Your round trip from Cuckmere Haven to Alfriston and back will take around a laidback five to six hours for a lovely leisurely outing.

At the end of your paddle, you’ll be treated to a hot drink. The perfect way to recharge and relive the highlights of your River Cuckmere kayak adventure after a rewarding journey on the river.
