What Can I Expect
Visit Fort Amherst for afternoon tea! Enjoy all those sweet and savoury teatime treats in historic Chatham at the cafe inside the grounds of this fascinating fort that dates back to the Napoleonic era.
Rather appropriately named the Cannon Cafe, you’ll find this delightful little eatery just inside the main gates of Fort Amherst. Light and airy with a warm welcome, this is afternoon tea at its traditional best, albeit in unusual surroundings!
You will be served a platter featuring dainty sandwiches, slices of cakes, tarts and, of course, a scone with jam and cream. Tea and coffee is unlimited and if you fancy a bit of sparkle, go for the Prosecco option for unlimited bubbles whilst you eat.
Of course, the setting is unique. Fort Amherst is the country’s biggest Napoleonic Fort and there are over 20-acres of grounds to explore, with cannons, lookout points and more. It’s actually the highest point in Medway, which was all the better for keeping watch on the docks.
Built to stave off an enemy attack from France, that never happened, but Amherst had roles to play in both World Wars. As you take a wander, you’ll see information panels telling you all about the history.
