What Can I Expect
An epic, five-day Sword Making course in Kent! You will join expert blacksmith Owen in his Welling workshop to craft your very own sword that you will be able to proudly take home with you.
These courses in Kent run over five consecutive days and they are suitable for beginners. You will need a fair bit of determination, as working steel all day can be intense, but it is incredibly satisfying.
You will be making a Medieval Arming sword. That’s to say a knight’s sword that would have been worn as a side arm and used for close combat. These double-bladed, single-handed swords were designed for speed, agility and cutting. Just what you’d need as a brave knight of old!
And in fact, Owen prides himself on making historically-accurate Viking and Saxon-style swords, as well as making pieces inspired by myth and legend. He’s a highly skilled tutor and all-round fascinating character you’ll love to meet and work with.
Over the course of the five days, you will be hands-on in every aspect of turning your steel into a fully-fledged sword, complete with customised handle, pommel and cross guards too.
Make no mistake, these are ‘real’ swords and are actually finished sharp, so to round off your week (and if there’s time) you will be invited to practice some sword techniques on tatami mats and rope cords. Impressive stuff.
Whether you are fascinated by all things mythical or historical, or just want to develop your blacksmithing skills, these intensive five-day sword making courses at this Welling forge in Kent are a great choice, with a very impressive end-product suitable for any noble knight!
