What Can I Expect
Calling all teens - these junior rowing experiences in Cambridge are just for you! We are offering vouchers for half-day tasters and youth rowing courses over several sessions, for anyone aged 13 to 18 years who is keen to learn how to row.
Experiences are all run out of the club's boathouse on the shores of the River Cam in Cambridge. The facilities are really good, with a well-equipped gym, changing rooms, classrooms, relaxing areas and a large indoor storage area filled with various boats.
Headed up by Omar, the idea of these youth courses is to give youngsters a way to get into the sport of rowing. For many of the kids attending it's their first time rowing any sort of boat, so it's a real thrill to get out on the waters of the lovely River Cam.
Those banks of erg machines in the clubhouse gym are put to good use as the teen rowers will learn how to use their arms and legs to hone that smooth rowing stroke, before heading out in a classic ‘eight' boat on the river.
The kids will be learning how to ‘sweep' row, which means they each have one blade and use both hands, so there are eight rowers per boat. They need to stay in time to make sure the boat goes in a straight line in the water - and that's where the coxswain comes in. Sitting in the stern of the boat facing forward, they will be keeping the kids in line!
Well-organised, with a great learning atmosphere that puts confidence in the kids, it's a great introduction to the sport, with many teens joining clubs at University or locally after doing a junior rowing course in Cambridge.
