What Can I Expect
Fort Amherst tunnel tours - so much history literally under your feet! We are offering 80-minute guided tours inside the caves and tunnels under Fort Amherst in Chatham, with adult, child and family tickets available.
Overlooking the River Medway in the heart of Chatham's historic old town you'll find Fort Amherst. With commanding views over the whole town and along the estuary, the fort has been protecting Medway for over 250 years, with a history that goes right back to Napoleonic times.
The tunnels you'll be exploring are underneath the Fort. Originally naturally-formed chalk caves, work was done way back in the 1790s to reinforce the caves with brick arches. This was all part of the plan, along with many cannons, soldiers and artillery, to defend against invasion during the Napoleonic wars.
When you head into the tunnels you'll be surprised how large and roomy many of them are. And in fact, you'll spot things like beds, desks, crockery and telephones down there. Does this mean the tunnels were used again? Who was down there? It all relates to the very important role the tunnels played in the Second World War…
It's utterly fascinating stuff and all the guides will have you all captivated throughout. Kids will be kept entertained with things to do, see, touch and try. Guides are always up for answering questions and they might even have a few corny jokes for you too!
Before or after your wander into the underground world, make sure you visit the Fort grounds. Take some selfies with the cannons and those impossible-to-lift cannonballs, take in the views across the water and make sure you stop off at The Pantry cafe for a cuppa.
Fort Amherst tunnel tours run all year round (the temperature is pretty constant in the tunnels) and as they are always really popular, make sure you book in advance. Captivating Kentish history at its best thanks to the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust!
