What Can I Expect

Food on the move at the East Somerset Railway Burger Evening! Ride in a heritage diesel train on the East Somerset line, with a tasty burger and chips supper to eat too. A fun and convivial evening out on the rails.

These great value packages include your return trip, a burger with chips and a soft drink for all passengers. Departures leave Cranmore Station at 6pm and return for 8pm. You will be travelling the full length of the line and back (a total of around five miles) and enjoying all the country views on the way.

Diesel Multiple Units, like the one you will be travelling in, were commonplace on cross country routes in from the 60s right through to the 90s. DMUs quite happily trundled along miles and miles of tracks all around the country, before being replaced by modern electric trains.

With the driver's cab and passenger compartments all in one unit (as opposed to having a separate locomotive pulling the carriages) passengers get the advantage of having that driver's view. 

This particular diesel cab unit was built in Derby in 1960. Coupled with its power car also built in Derby in the same year, this duo remained in traffic right up until July 1993. After being withdrawn from Network South East, the pair was left languishing in storage until being purchased for preservation.

Today, set L231 runs along the East Somerset Railway, resplendent in her new livery and newly restored, authentic BR interior.
