What Can I Expect

Christmas at Fort Amherst! The ‘Glimpse of Christmas' event is coming to this famous fort in Chatham from the 6th to the 24th December 2024 and we've got voucher tickets for you and the family to buy online.

One of the Medway area's most iconic landmarks, this Napoleonic fortification on the hill is lovingly looked after and run by the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust. These festive events bring yuletide fun to the fort.

A winter's walk through history, you'll discover the fort's role over time. Built in 1756 to defend the Chatham Naval Dockyard and the River Medway, Amherst was a key defence during the Napoleonic wars from 1803 to 1815.

The Victorian age saw Fort Amherst being used as a training ground, when practice sieges would draw in considerable crowds eager to watch. During the Second World War, Amherst operated as an Air Raid Warning Command Post and today you can still see how the inside of the fort was during the war.

These Christmas events at the fort are wonderfully atmospheric. Visiting Amherst on a cold, crisp December day just adds to the ambience, as you head off on your 90-minute interactive tour.

After exploring, there'll be wassailing (singing, dancing and merriment!) and you'll be invited to enjoy a Christmassy mince pie treat and hot drink. We can also highly recommend the Christmas Tea option, with sandwiches, sweet treats, scones and unlimited hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate to warm the cockles of your heart!

Christmas at Fort Amherst runs from the 6th December to Christmas Eve and is a wonderful festive event for all ages, with adult and child tickets available.
