Set deep in the Dorset countryside, just south of Shaftesbury, this airfield is a delightful place for flights in a Stearman. Your backdrop includes Cranborne Chase, Fontmell and Melbury Downs - and you get to look down on it all from the air.
The Stearman biplane has a long history as a military trainer aircraft, serving with the US Air Force, the Canadian Air Force and later the US Navy, helping young pilots gain their wings.
Back in the day, thousands of Stearman planes were built. After the end of WW2, many were sold off. You'd see post-war Stearmans working as crop dusters, serving as sports planes and doing everything from aerobatics to wing walking at air displays.
