What Can I Expect
Blacksmith courses in the Yorkshire Dales! Three and five-hour experiences with blacksmith Richard in his traditional forge at Grassington in the heart of the lovely Yorkshire Dales.
This is your chance to forge a new skill and learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing on these fantastic courses aimed at those with little or no previous experience. Your host is Richard, a traditionally-trained blacksmith with a passion for contemporary ironwork. He is a brilliant teacher with lots of patience, who lets you have a go and assists when you need it.
Richard's forge is in Grassington, a picture-postcard pretty village in the Dales, with stone buildings, the meandering River Wharfe, lots of delightful gift and craft shops, bakeries, cafes and the Yorkshire Dales Visitor Centre. It really is a great place to ‘make a weekend of it' if you are travelling for these courses.
Fully-equipped to welcome five students at a time, Richard's coal-fire forge is at the centre of these three and five-hour courses. Make no mistake, forging metal is hard work and pretty physical too, so get ready to roll up those sleeves and get stuck in.
Hand making an ironwork piece that is bespoke to you for you is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. You will learn a lot and achieve things you never thought possible, with techniques and tools that have been used by blacksmiths for centuries.
