So Sam Smith IS recording the James Bond theme song for Spectre!
Have you heard the news? After several denials, it has finally been confirmed this morning that Sam Smith is doing the opening song for the forthcoming Bond film, Spectre!
Rumours were flying yesterday (Monday) when Sam Smith tweeted a picture of his hand with a silver ring on his finger that was engraved with the very distinctive Spectre ‘octopus’ logo and now the cat is well and truly out of the bag and the singer is relieved he can now talk about it.
Indeed, he revealed today that the song was actually recorded back in January and whilst not getting official confirmation from the film’s producers that his song was to be used until six weeks ago, he has had to keep his musical mission top secret for all those months.
Titled ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, you will be able to download the song from the 25th September. And as you can imagine, it’s been a social media frenzy since the news was officially announced, with an overwhelmingly positive response for the choice of Sam Smith to take over from Adele’s crown when she sang ‘Skyfall’ for the Bond film of the same name.
Apparently four-times Grammy award winning Smith met with Barbara Broccoli and director Sam Mendes to discuss his involvement in Spectre and he left the meeting with the complete script for the film. As you can imagine, he was bound to secrecy from the start and told Radio 1s Nick Grimshaw this morning that: ‘every page of the script had my name it on it, so if just one page when missing they’d know exactly where it came from!’.
Sam admits it’s a serious dream come true to be able to co-write and record a Bond theme and with such enthusiasm by this fan of the heartfelt balled, it’s little wonder the song took literally minutes to write after he’d got the plot line in his mind. He even revealed that the Spectre production team loved the demo recording he made so much, that’s the vocal track they went with for the finished production!
Spectre is due to be released in British cinemas on 6th October, followed by a release across the pond in the USA from the 2nd November – and we can’t wait!
